Great tunes Dicey Reilly's, Teignmouth on Fri 14th Jan 11

My wife and I have seen El-Cojones many times over the year and loved then to bits so we were very surprised when we went to Dicey's to see their front man and his new band. The new band is called Shovelhead.

We propped up the bar and what followed was a magic night - the quality of the music was awesome and they have a great sound system too.

In the first set we loved REM's The One I Love, Roxette by Doctor Feelgood, House of the Rising Sun, Iggy Pop's The Passenger and a new one from them, My Brother Jake, all excellent.

Second set we heard: I Fought The Law, Bad Company's Movin' On and a brilliant version of Superstition. These guys are real pros and did several encores. The banter was great, loved the story about the blonde and the 747.

Cant' wait for the next time - thanks guys.

Afternoon Legends The Ferryboat, Shaldon on Sun 6th Feb 11

Me and some of my mates from our rugby club were seeing off an old mate to foreign shores by spending an afternoon getting sloshed in the Ferryboat. The afternoon's entertainment was two characters by the names of Bug Zappa and Dick Scratcher. They warmed us up gently with some 'sing song' numbers, Beatles, Fratellis, Zutons, then in the second set they had the whole pub singing (apart from their version of La Bamba which had me in tears of laughter), we had 'Stuck in the Middle With You', '24 Years of Living Next Door to Alice' and yes we did play our part. By the time their second encore was going on we were on our feet (Delilah) and the afternoon was done with 'Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life' which we all sang.

Thanks lads, a cracking afternoon. We shall return the next time you are playing the Ferryboat.

New band on the circuit The Old Manor Inn, Paignton on Fri 29th Oct 2010

Had a night out at the Old Manor in Paignton last night expecting to see Three Bags Full, only to find out they had pulled out.

The band that stepped up to replace them was a new band called Shovelhead (named after an iconic Harley Davidson so I'm told), a five piece with keyboards.

I recognised the front man from the Bailjumpers but the rest were new to us.

First set was great numbers by REM, Stray Cats and Santana, and the second set was really good, starting with a song I have never heard a live band do: "Movin' On" by Bad Company - it was a real treat. Then it was numbers like "I Fought the Law", "Start Me Up", and we danced for ages. The highlight of the night was the encore, "Superstition".

Looking forward to Xmas eve when they return.

Best band in town - The Old Manor Inn, Paignton on Fri 1st Oct 10

Friday night I went to see a band I have never seen before, The Bail Jumpers (although I recognised the singer). What a great band they are - a four piece with a guest Sax player and to say they rocked the place would be an understatement.

From the off they had us all jumping, singing then dancing with some great numbers. We loved Red House, Rebel Yell, Molly's Chamber (sang by Dan the guitar player who was the star of the show) and Gay Bar (sung by Robbie, again another star but then they all were). Red House was amazing.

The highlights of the night were the evergreen "Whisky in the Jar" (done by the band for the first time) to which we sang our hearts out and the sax man came into his own on their encore, "Superstition".

Blinding drum solo in "Born to be Wild" and the poor roadie (Chopper, the mind boggles) was given stick all night.

I believe they have been booked in for next year and we can't wait to have them back. Thanks for a lovely evening boys, best night out I've had in ages.

Please come back - New Quay Inn, Teignmouth on Fri 23rd Jul 10

I'm down in Teignmouth on holiday and thought I would catch a few bands in carnival week.

Down a small road near the Docks is a pub called the Newquay Inn who have bands every Friday and Saturday (it really is a great venue, very lively).

The poster said the Bail Jumpers Rock and Blues band bought to you c/o Devon Probation Service! I thought this looks like fun and I was spot on.

What a great band in your face from the off. They were quite a lively bunch of varying ages, the singer and drummer looked in their 40s and the bassman and guitar player looked like teenagers. Some great numbers, Deep Purple's Black Night and Smoke, Wishing Well, Rebel Yell... and Gay Bar had me in stitches.

The work on Red House was amazing - the big man sang from the soles of his boots and some wicked guitar from Mr Seamore Bush - these guys were a laugh a minute and took great delight in winding up the barmaid whose birthday it was.

We were shouting for "more more more" at the end - thanks for a great night out guys.
